On sleepless nights, I write

Three in the morning. I am wide awake. I had gotten up to use the toilet. Now, as I lay awake, the sound from the ceiling fan and the snoring beside me shattered any chance of going back to sleep.

So, I got up and headed to the kitchen. I did not switch on any of the lights. Another one of my sleepless nights. It is not ‘Sleepless in Seatle’. Mine doesn’t have romance in it.

From the fridge I took some grapes then walked to the living room. Poping a grape into my mouth, I sat down on the settee.

My cats were sprawled in different spots fast asleep. Twilight was in her basket, Misty was on the floor and Shadow was on the settee next to me.

My hand reached out to pat Shadow and she opened her eyes and looked at me. Within seconds she was asleep again, purring like a fine-tuned engine.

I envied my feline pet her ability to fall asleep after being woken up. Sighing, I got up and walked to the front door and opened it.

The street light cast its yellow glow while the trees cast their shadow. The neighbourhood was quiet, nothing moved. Except me, awake and restless.

I closed the front door and headed back to my bedroom. The clock in the dining room showed three thirty. Time drags when you cannot sleep.

I crawled into bed. The sound from the ceiling fan and the snoring was as loud as ever. Knowing I won’t fall asleep soon, I switched on my mobile and clicked on the memo icon.

I started writing. Before I knew it, the time on my mobile flashed seven o’clock. Four hours had flown. It was time to get up.

I was exhausted. Most probably I’ll be grumpy and irritating the whole day. Yet, I was happy as the night was spent doing the one thing I loved….. writing.

I'm a Eurasian of Portuguese, English, Scottish and Malay heritage. And my extended family are of Chinese and Indian heritage. In recent years, the younger generation have added on to include spouses from the Philippines, Nigeria and Russia. My world is made up of different colours like the rainbow. And like the rainbow I am unique. Reading is my form of relaxation, to escape from the drudgery of daily life and enter into a world of the imagination. It is the love of reading that has led me to try my hand in writing short stories and poems. I hope that in some way my stories and poems will take you for a little while away from the drudgery of the present into the pages of imagination. To new friends found, I bid you, Welcome. Sincerely, C.E. Pereira

      1. And you too! I had a few of those nights lately…lucky for.me the Australian Open Tennis Tournament is on all night 😉 I’m like you…if I get up to write then there will be no sleep. But tv always has the option to put me to sleep!
        Blessings 💜
