When is a man a gentleman?

How many men are gentlemen?
Even in the absences of ladies.
To not use foul language.
To view a female body with respect.

Someone’s mother; someone’s wife.
A gentleman cares and protects.
A man’s daughter, a man’s sister.
Their virtue a man’s honour to protect.

Has the world gone backwards?
To become uncivilised and coarse.
Can a man be blamed solely?
For women can be as unladylike too.

Children learn quick to swear.
Of course not in front of parents.
Teenagers think it’s cool to swear.
A vocabulary limited to four letter words.

Men who undress women with their eyes.
They leer and insinuate sexual desires.
Commenting on a woman’s voluptuous breast.
Disrespecting the women in their lives.

Women who dress indecently or scantily.
They use suggestive words and gestures.
I am not a prude. I am not on a witch hunt.
Maybe I’m just plain old-fashioned.
