A six-year-old in awe
tightly holding onto her Daddy
while the iron beast bellowed
smoke and steam hissed and spewed.
Heart racing, excitement high
the platform a flurry of chaos
eyes wide, absorbing and watching
the stoker shovels coal, fire flares.
Out of a child’s imagination
comes dragons breathing fire
the pages of a book, comes alive
while the iron maiden whistles.
The little girl waiting to ride
such a mighty steam engine
its horn blows, a lonesome sound
slowly it chugs, like a beast awakening.
